Do you have an Iphone 3g or 3gs and wondering whether you should upgrade the operating system to IOS4? We have been looking at and using the new features to find out what all the fuss is about.

If you would like to know more about how to get these new features working call us on 0845 8384309.

If you are going to upgrade your Iphone operating system please ensure you complete a backup first and consult the Apple website.

Application folders: Rather than having pages and pages of applications to flick through you can set up application folders, group by social networking, news, navigation etc. If an alert hits any of the applications within the folder it will be highlighted with an exclamation mark.

Unified inbox: If you have multiple accounts you can now view all your emails in one place or you can have separate inboxes.

SMS search: Email has always had a search facility, now the same facility is available for SMS. To view the search box, scroll to the top of your messages.

Spell check: Iphone has always had a spell check, now it looks the same as other spell check facilities. If you misspell a word it will be underlined in red, tap on the highlighted word to reveal a list of possible corrections.

Email threading: You can now set your email messages to thread, if you open an email which has been backwards and forwards between yourself and the recipient a number of times you can see the email thread rather than individual emails.

Failed SMS notification: On the previous operating system you couldn’t see that a message had failed until you went into the SMS application. On IOS4 an exclamation mark will appear on the application to notify you that a message has not been sent.

Multi tasking: Multi tasking allows you to quickly switch between applications, using one whilst another continues doing tasks in the background. For example tapping on a link on an email will take you to safari, by double clicking the home button you can go directly back to your email, similarly you can receive Skype calls whilst using other applications on your phone. Previously Skype would need to be open and on screen to receive a call.

Other snazzy new features

Custom backgrounds: You can now set your own background from your pictures.

Re-size photos: When emailing a photo you will be asked if you would like to reduce the size of the picture before sending it. This will reduce the download time for the recipient.

Alpha numeric pass codes: You can now set your Iphone unlock code to an alpha numeric code, this allows for extra security for your phone.

Birthday Calendar: The birthdays within your contacts can now be shown in your calendar a red spot to the left of the text signifies a birthday. To enable this facility go into calendar, click on calendar (top right hand corner) and ensure there is a tick in the birthdays field.

Smart links for dates and places: Addresses and dates will be smart linked within emails if you tap on a date you will be directed to your calendar. If you tap on an address in an email you will be redirected to Google Maps.

3G Skype calls: On previous versions of the Iphone software you could only make and receive Skype calls on a wifi connection. With a simple upgrade to Skype through the App Store you can now make and receive Skype calls on a 3G connection.

We are more than halfway through 2010, what a hectic three months we have had at Shield Technologies. Back in March we decided to take part in the 2010 Sue Ryder Care Big Wigs challenge, and it was a huge challenge given that we decided to hold an event on 12th June 2010 showing the first England game of the World Cup live on a big screen, it left us just three months to organise the event. More about that later………..

You may have seen our updates on Twitter and Facebook recently about a grant managed by Business Link. The grant is available to businesses in the east of England and offers up to £4000 towards IT projects. The programme is driven by the long held view that IT infrastructure can improve productivity, efficiency and growth for businesses. If you would like further information about this programme go to http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail?site=150&type=RESOURCES&itemId=5000907531

We have also been busy building relationships with new and existing customers. Part of this process requires one of the Shield team to visit each of our existing customers to complete a customer satisfaction visit. If you are an existing Safety Net customer we will be contacting you over the next 3 months to arrange a visit. This visit will be based upon the service we provide rather than any particular IT issues you may have, although the team member who visits you will note any particular issues. If you are not a customer of Shield Technologies but would like to know more about our Safety Net support contract call 0845 8384309 or email sales@shieldtechnologies.co.uk.

It is hard to remember the days before the dot com revolution. 25 years ago on 15th March 1985 the first dot com domain name symbolic.com appeared on the internet. Having a domain name made it easier and quicker to access a website; it meant that users did not have to remember a series of numbers and dots.

It took more than 2 years for the first 100 .com sites to go live, since the late 90’s though the number of .com sites has grown to a staggering 80 million according to recent research conducted by the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation (ITIF).

The internet’s vast expansion has had its problems; in the early 2000’s when investors lost millions when the .com bubble burst and more recently internet fraud losses have been estimated at $560 million dollars per year.

Despite the downside, the internet has been a revolution and has a bright future for conducting business and sharing information, providing security is maintained.

In March, after attending a Business Club networking event Mark left a flyer on my desk from Sue Ryder Care, the flyer was all about the Sue Ryder Care Big Wigs challenge. Mark suggested we think about giving it a go! Give it a go we did, on Saturday 12th June 2010 we hosted a World Cup big screen event, showing the first England game of the World Cup campaign and an auction in aid of the charity.

As many of you will know Sue Ryder Care supports people with specialist palliative, end of life and long-term neurological care needs. Each year they provide 4 million hours of care to people living with cancer, multiple sclerosis, huntington’s disease, motor neurone disease and brain injury.

With this in mind we managed to raise over £1000 from tickets sales. After the game we held an auction in aid of Sue Ryder Care and our guests dug deep and managed to raise a further £4125. There are still a few pennies rolling in from collection tins and from the sale of photos taken at the event and we will let you know what the total is in due course.

I would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to a number of people who really went above and beyond to support Shield Technologies in raising as much money as possible for Sue Ryder Care. Firstly Andy Russell at Innovations VCS, Andy loaned all the audio visual equipment which was used on the night, he arrived at Orton Hall Hotel early in the day to get set up and spent over 2 hours getting the audio visual equipment ready. Orton Hall Hotel who made it possible to raise so much on ticket sales by allowing us to use the room free of charge. Martin Bird of Martin Bird Photography who offered his services free of charge, Martin offered our guests the opportunity to have their photo taken with a World Cup stadium in the background, these photographs proved a great success. Langford Smith our auctioneer, I am sure anyone who attended will agree that Langford did a fantastic job. Finally I would like to thank Nigel and Marcus at PPS Print. Although unable to make the event Nigel contributed with the design and marketing of the event, Marcus provided all of the print free of charge.

It was a great night (apart of course from the result of the game) attended by many of the great and good of Peterborough’s business community.

Organising this event was challenging, however I would strongly urge any business supporting charities to consider taking up the Big Wigs challenge next year.
